Back up Kindle books using Kindle e-reader

This tip works for anyone who owns a Kindle e-reader. It’s a quite useful idea to get access to the ebook library even when you don’t have access to the internet.

Also, it’s good if you want to add to your Kindle – and therefore, Kindle cloud library – the books that you acquired from other sites. We’ve got the extended list of the sites that offer free Kindle ebooks from the public domain.

There are two steps to back up Kindle ebooks via Kindle e-reader:

1. Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB cable.
2. Find the folder containing the books and copy it to disc.

1. Connect the Kindle to your computer with a USB cable

When you connect the Kindle to your computer, either PC or Mac, it will appear as an external drive. Open the drive icon, and locate the folder named “documents”.

Among other files types, the folder contains files in .azw format. It’s a .mobi file, protected with Amazon’s own DRM.

2. Copy the folder to a desired destination

Drag the “documents” folder to a desired place on your disc. You can also copy it to any cloud service you use, like Dropbox or Google Drive.

These cloud services are different from the cloud served by the Amazon. The files there are yours, and no one will change or update them if you don’t allow it.

Things to remember

Please keep in mind that you’ll copy only the files that are stored on the Kindle e-reader, and not the ones archived in the cloud.

To back up all the books from your Kindle library, you’ll first need to download them to the Kindle e-reader, which may take some time.

Back up Kindle books using Kindle desktop app

Using Kindle desktop app is convenient for Kindle users who don’t own an e-reader, and use mobile apps (iOS, Android) to read the ebooks.

It’s also good for Kindle e-reader owners who keep most of their books not on the e-reader but in the cloud.

There are four steps to back up Kindle books via Kindle desktop app:

1. Download the Kindle desktop application (there are versions for PC and Mac).
2. Download the books from the cloud to the app.
3. Locate the folder with Kindle books on your computer.
4. Copy it to disc.

1. Download the Kindle desktop app

The Kindle application lets you not only manage, but also read Kindle books on the computer. It’s available for the following systems:

• Kindle for Windows 7, XP and Vista
• Kindle for Windows 8
• Kindle for Mac

When you go to free Kindle apps page on Amazon and click on the Download button, the version that fits the operating system of your computer will start downloading immediately.

After instaling the app, open it and sign in with your Amazon credentials.

2. Download the books from the cloud

In the app, in the Library view on the left, you’ll see how many books you have in your Kindle cloud library. There are three sections:

• All items – how many books you have in your Kindle account in total,
• Downloaded items – how many books you have on the disc of your PC or Mac computer,
• Archived items – these books are stored in the Kindle cloud, and not downloaded to the computer.

Each book that’s not on your computer has a cloud icon in the bottom right corner.

To download the book (on Mac), either double-click on the book cover or select “Download” from a Ctrl+Click menu.

There is no option to download the Kindle books in bulk. You’ll have to do it title by title, but with the double-click, it’s pretty fast.

Please have in mind that just like with Kindle e-reader, you’ll have to download all the books from the archive to the Kindle app, if you want to back up all of them.

3. Locate the folder with downloaded books

Below there are paths to find that folder:

Models and availability[edit]

Ten models were produced. The PRS-500 (PRS standing for Portable Reader System) was made available in the United States in September 2006. On 1 November 2006, Readers went on display and for sale at Borders bookstores throughout the US. Borders had an exclusive contract for the Reader until the end of 2006. From April 2007, Sony Reader has been sold in the US by multiple merchants, including Fry's Electronics, Costco, Borders and Best Buy. The eBook Store from Sony is only available to US or Canadian residents or to customers who purchased a US-model reader with bundled eBook Store credit.

On July 24, 2007, Sony announced that the PRS-505 Reader would be available in the UK with a launch date of September 3, 2008. On August 25, 2009 Sony announced the Reader PRS-900 'Daily Edition.'^[7] This features a 7' diagonal screen to compete with the Amazon Kindle DX. It's also the first to feature free 3G wireless through AT&T to access the Sony eBookstore without the need of a computer, and to increase the grayscale level, from 8 to 16.

In September 1, 2010, Sony introduced the PRS-350 Pocket Edition, PRS-650 Touch Edition, PRS-950 'Daily Edition' as replacements for the PRS-300, PRS-600 and PRS-900, with both new models featuring 16-level grey scale touch screens. The launch of the new models also represented the introduction of the Sony Reader into the Australian and New Zealand markets for the first time.^[8]

On August 31, 2011, Sony announced a new reader replacing all of their previous models, the PRS-T1, featuring a 6' screen.^[9]

On August 16, 2012, Sony announced the PRS-T1 successor, the PRS-T2.^[10]

On September 4, 2013, Sony announced the PRS-T2 successor, the PRS-T3. Unlike previous Sony reader models, the T3 is not sold in the US, and Sony has abandoned the North American market due to competition from Amazon, B&N and Kobo.^[11]

On February 6, 2014, Sony announced that it was closing its North American, Europe, and Australia Reader Stores in late March, migrating all its customers to the Kobo Reader Store.^[12]

  I think this is a user setting, you might need to do this for each user..

  Replace 'com.apple.preview' by the CFBundleIdentifier of Adobe Reader (you will find it in the Info.plist of the application).

Plus, anecdotally speaking, there seems to be an increasing number of individuals moving to RSS from social networks like Twitter or Facebook to better filter out junk news. So, which one is best? Evaluation Criteria for the Best RSS Reader When looking at RSS clients for the Mac, integration is the name of the game. Any real contender should be able to pull feeds from any of the popular online services such as Feedly, Feed Wrangler, Feedbin, NewsBlur and more. In testing RSS apps for this review, I set up accounts with Feedly, Feedbin, and Feed Wrangler with the same set of feeds subscribed to in each. For apps that don’t sync with RSS services, I had a test .OPML file with the same feeds in the same folders. Getting data out is just as important, however. A good RSS app should be able to save content to read-it-later services and share links on social networks as well as built-in macOS apps like Mail, Messages, and more. Lastly, and perhaps most important, a good RSS client should be easy to use and present users with a clean, efficient reading environment. Our Pick: Reeder is the Best RSS Reader for Mac The best RSS reader for Mac is Reeder 4. Reeder should be a familiar name to iOS users. In fact, when the Mac app first launched in 2011, it was a port from iOS to the Mac. Here’s Federico Viticci in his review of the original app: Whilst Reeder for iOS and Reeder for Mac are the same app as far as the main concept goes (quickly fetch unread items for Google Reader, skim through them easily, provide features to do anything you want with RSS feeds), Reeder on macOS is obviously more “powerful” when you take in consideration the keyboard support, the subscription management, or the simple fact that links can be opened in the background in your desktop browser. For as much as people have criticized Reeder for Mac for being the start of an evil trend that will see iOS apps coming to the desktop (good luck with that), the undeniable truth is that Reeder is a Mac app, with all the evident advantages and limitations that come with it. While the app we have today has seen a lot of improvements and changes in the years since launch, the fundamental experience of using Reeder has remained: it’s a fast and fluid way to blast through RSS feeds on the Mac. Reeder and Online Services Reeder can sync with a whole suite of online services, including: Reeder syncs smoothly with all three of my test accounts: Feedly, Feedbin, and Feed Wrangler. Unlike some apps that struggle with Feed Wrangler’s filters-that-are-only-kind-of-folders approach, Reeder knew what to do, presenting items organized by folder like the other accounts. When coupled with one of these services, Reeder will pull in unread items based on their state with the service. Mark something read on the web, and Reeder won’t pull it as unread. This means that if you use an RSS client on your iPad or iPhone as well as your Mac, they should stay in sync. Marking something as read on one device will mean it will show as read on others. Syncing with a web service also means that the speed at which an article will appear in Reeder isn’t up to the app itself, but the service in question. Speaking of speed, Reeder can be incredibly fast. In testing, it was able to sync with a Feedly account with 4,500 unread items in less than a minute. Service sharing in Reeder 4 has changed significantly. Whereas in Reeder, a whole host of sharing services could be used, Reeder 4 has opted to trim away direct support for all these services and instead uses the system share sheet. The Actions and Sharing section of Reeder 4’s preferences essentially takes the system share sheet and adds the option to add these services directly to Reeder’s reading toolbar: Once set up, this can be prove to be very powerful and efficient, but the setup process is a little clunky. A sharing method has to be enabled, but the app also allows a user to pin these to the toolbar or be assigned a keyboard shortcut. All in all, Reeder 4 has opted to scale back the amount of direct support for third-party services in the latest update, but we don’t feel there’s a huge loss in functionality. Most of these sharing services were duplicated between the direct support in Reeder 3 and the share sheet in macOS. Trimming back direct support makes Reeder 4 feel more consistent and focused. Read it Later in Reeder Reeder has long had the ability to sync your read-it-later queue from Instapaper and read your queue right within the app. Once you’ve plowed through your RSS feeds and saved what you want to read, having the ability to stay within the app to read your Instapaper queue keeps everything consistent and easy to use. Reeder 4 takes read-it-later one step further: you can now create a Reeder 4 “Read Later” account, which syncs across both Mac and iOS. Read Later acts much like the Instapaper integration — you can add items quickly and easily to Read Later and, well, read those articles at a later time. Read Later is a proprietary read-it-later service built into Reeder 4, so you can’t send articles from Safari to your Reeder Read Later account. One of my favorite parts about Reeder’s Read Later service is how it handles articles in your article list. Whenever you click on an article in the regular feed article list, the article is marked as “read,” the Read Later article list does not automatically mark an article as “read” if you click on it. You have to make the conscious decision to mark your Read Later articles as “read,” ensuring they don’t disappear from your Read Later list accidentally. It’s great to see Reeder 4 build out its read-it-later functionality with its own internal service, and it sure would be great if the internal service was accessible from other apps across macOS. As it stands, the Read Later function is likely best suited for those who are looking to keep their RSS articles separate from their larger read-it-later queue inside Instapaper. Reading in Reeder RSS is all about text, so if the best RSS reader is going to be worth its salt, then it should provide a great reading experience. Now you can grab any news story and drag it either to Lire’s own drop-shelf (iPhone and iPad), or to another app (iPad). It really makes great use of iOS 11’s drag-and-drop, but is let down by other apps’ poor implementation for receiving dropped items. RSS in 2018? RSS is still the best way to keep up with news. An RSS aggregator checks in on your favorite websites periodically, and arranges any new articles, posts or stories into easy-to-browse lists. It’s way better than Twitter because: 1) You never miss a story because it disappeared into your busy timeline 2) Sites implement RSS at a deep level, which means publishers don’t need to hand-post each article to Twitter or implement an automatic posting service. So you never miss a story, but neither are you overwhelmed, because it’s easy to select just what you want. Lire looks fugly (to begin with) Lire is an iOS RSS reader that connects to services like Newsblur, or Feedly, which keep your feeds’ read status synced across all your devices. Lire isn’t bad. Its design is passable, although the way it lays out articles to actually read is ugly and messy. That’s a shame, because all it has to do is present some text and maybe some images. Looks-wise, Unread is probably the gold standard iOS RSS app, but it’s not very good at handling large amounts of feeds. Out of the box, Lire isn’t pretty, but some futzing with the view options improves things quite a lot. Lire also lacks a three-pane view, which I prefer. This put the sources on the left, then the lists of articles from the currently selected source, then the article itself. And once you tap an article to read it, it takes up the whole screen, even on a 12-inch iPad Pro, so you lose context from the article list. Reeder, my current RSS reader, does all of this better, but it is also living in abandonware limbo. Drag-and-drop Lire’s drag-and-drop functionality is exemplary. You can drag an article, in which case it is shared as a URL to whatever app it’s dropped on. Or you can select and drag text, which can be accepted as plain text, rich text or HTML, depending on how the destination app chooses to handle it. If the dragged text contains images, they also will be carried along for the ride, but they might not always be accepted by the target app (images are included as links in HTML selections, as far as I can tell). This opens up all kinds of neat workflows, especially on the iPad. You can put Lire and, say, Notes side by side in Split View, and drag snippets and whole articles to save them in a note. Or you can drag an article to your to-do list app of choice. Unfortunately, my to-do list app of choice is Things, and this does play well with dropped URLs. All it does is make a new to-do item with the url as the body of the to-do. It doesn’t add the title into the title field. That means you end up with a list of to-dos that all have no title. That’s as useless as it sounds. Lire’s drag bar Best Rss Reader For Mac But Lire has another trick. Its drag bar lets you gather articles by dragging them. You can drag one article at a time. Or you can tap more to gather a bunch and drop them together. It’s not a persistent drop-bar. You can’t keep adding stories to a stack in order to act on them later. Instead, when you drop your dragged articles, a sharing menu pops up. It gives you options to star the items, to share them (via the standard iOS share sheet), or to send direct to one of several supported services, like Pinboard, Instapaper, Evernote and so on. Lire is pretty great Lire is one of the best RSS readers for iOS, with just the right mix of features and ease-of-use. If you’re coming from Reeder, like me, then you might not like some of the design choices. But Lire is fast. You can force it to look decent. And the drag-and-drop proves a welcome addition, even if it only shares URLs and not rich links for articles. Rss Reader For Safari If nothing else, it’s about a million times better than Twitter.
